16 Days of Activism Against
Gender Based Violence: November 25 – December 10

All across the globe, women and girls are targeted victims of violence simply because of their gender.

Sixteen Days of Activism – starting on November 25th on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls, and lasting through December 10th -  Human Rights Day – is an annual global campaign to draw awareness to this serious issue.

Zonta Club of New York hosts clothing drives in partnership with Dress for Success. This nonprofit organization empowers women by providing professional clothing, career guidance, and job placement assistance to unemployed and underemployed women giving them confidence to secure and retain meaningful employment.

Zonta Club of New York, along with partner organizations, joins forces with the NYC Commission on Gender Equity and invites members to support several programs taking place in the NYC area to draw awareness to gender-based violence.

Community Outreach, a non-profit organization headquartered at the Pilgrim Cathedral of Harlem, has given a Holiday Party for domestic violence survivors living in shelters. Women and children from shelters located in Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn attended and were treated to a wonderful lunch and holiday presents donated by volunteers, as well as Macys and other stores. Zonta Club of New York has sent volunteers every year to help set up the Toy Room; pack goody bags for the women and serve lunch.

Zonta The GIFT box is a walk in street-sculpture which on the outside appears to be an elaborately wrapped gift inviting visitors inside with gift tags promising jobs and opportunities. Once inside, visitors are faced with a different reality; stories from survivors of human trafficking around the world who were lured in by such promises. This unique project raises awareness of human trafficking by inviting visitors in to read the stories .  Volunteers,. including Zonta Club NYC, members, were on hand to provide information on trafficking and raising awareness.

Zonta advocates primarily at the United Nations (UN) and Council of Europe (CoE). Through these relationships, Zonta uses its strong voice to present our priorities and demand focused action when advocating for gender equality and women’s human rights worldwide.
